How to make an Android phone simple for a senior

Android doesn't have one senior mode for every phone. Samsung Galaxy phones have Easy mode built in. On other Android phones, like Google Pixel, you can still get most of the way there with bigger text and a tidy Home screen.

Quick answers

Does Android have a senior mode?

Samsung Galaxy phones have Easy mode: Settings > Display > Easy mode. Other Android phones don't have one built in, but you can make text and icons bigger.

What does Samsung Easy mode do?

Samsung says it enlarges on-screen items, uses a high-contrast keyboard and helps prevent accidental touches.

How big can the font get on Android?

Google says you can raise the font size up to 200% from the Font size setting or the Quick Settings tile (Android 13 and up).

Samsung Galaxy: turn on Easy mode

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Scroll down and tap Easy mode.
  4. Tap the switch to turn it on.

To go back, follow the same steps and turn the switch off.

Any Android phone: bigger, bolder text

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search for Font size and move the slider to the right.
  3. Search for Display size and move that slider right too. Buttons and icons get bigger.
  4. For extra clarity, go to Accessibility > Display size and text and turn on Bold text.
Tip

Google says the font size setting doesn't apply to some apps, so check the apps they use most.

Clear the clutter

  • Keep only the apps they use on the first Home screen: Phone, Messages, Camera, Photos.
  • Move everything else off that screen (it stays in the app list).
  • Put their favorite people on the Home screen as contact shortcuts, if the phone offers it.
