Medical alert systems compared, in plain English

A medical alert is a button someone wears. Press it and they can talk to someone for help. The hard part is picking one. This page explains the main types and the questions to ask before you pay.

Quick answers

What's the difference between home and mobile medical alerts?

A home system talks through a base unit in the house, over a landline or cellular. A mobile one uses cellular and GPS, so it works when you're out too.

Do I need a monitored system?

Monitored systems connect to a 24/7 call center and charge a monthly fee. Unmonitored ones call family or friends on a list you set up.

Is a "free" medical alert offer real?

Be careful. The FTC has sued companies that robocalled seniors about "free" medical alerts and then charged monthly fees that were hard to cancel.

The main types

  • Home system. A button plus a base unit in the house. Good for someone who doesn't go out much.
  • Mobile system. Works at home and out and about, using cellular and GPS, so help can find you.
  • Monitored. The button reaches a 24/7 call center. There's a monthly fee.
  • Unmonitored. The button calls family or friends on a list. Some can call emergency services if no one answers.
  • Built into a phone. Some senior phones have a help button. Lively's Jitterbug phones have Urgent Response, which Lively says is available 24/7 on certain plans.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. Is it waterproof? AARP notes many falls happen in the bathroom.
  2. Does it detect falls automatically, or must you press the button?
  3. How long does the battery last, and does it warn when it's low?
  4. Does it need a landline, and is there a battery backup if the power goes out?
  5. Who runs the call center, is it open 24/7, and how fast do they answer?
  6. What's the full cost? Ask for every fee: equipment, activation, monthly monitoring.
  7. What's the cancellation policy? Look for a trial period and no penalty to cancel.
  8. Test it in every room, and outside if they'll use it there.

Which brand?

We're still checking current plans and prices from medical alert companies directly, and we won't list prices until we've confirmed them. Start with the questions above, and get each company's full price in writing.
